Artwork from Andrea Marchi
- 1:21:43 AM - Elenkis
Andrea Marchi has sent us another great piece of art, this one he has named "Desolation" and says in his own words that it is expressly dedicated to the members of COSAS and also for the Taffers of all the world. Thanks Andrea!

FM: The Insurrection
- 12:56:21 AM - Elenkis
The Insurrection is the eagerly awaited second episode in frobber (Ken Ramsley)'s Keeper of the Prophesies series. The first episode, Hallucinations can also be found in our mission database. The readme has several notes that really should be read, including a warning for epilepsy sufferers that the mission contains flashing lights.

Thief 2 Fan Mission
Keeper of the Prophesies Ep 2: The Insurrection

 Filesize: 26.2 MB
 Released: 9/30/2002
 readme.txt

By: frobber (Ken Ramsley)

Plot Description: THE INSURRECTION is a continuation from HALLUCINATIONS (Episode 1) where Garrett is trying to gain access to the cathedral because he is poisoned and dying. He has been told by some Keepers that the solution to his problem lies in accessing a certain Precursor Portal located somewhere inside the Hammerite area which will lead him to a place where he can get some help.

Additional Comments: During the first few minutes the screen framerate may be lousy. This should improve fairly quickly, and by the time you really need better framerate, it should be a lot smoother.

Vissually-induced seizures are possible. Do not play this mission if flashing lights can trigger you.

FM: Something Up There

Hundreds of Free Textures
- 8:41:33 AM - Dan
I have some good news for mission designers. David Gurrea, former texture artist for Severrance, Blade of Darkness, has released a trememdious load of textures he created for free download. Here's why:
I've done about 90% of the TEXTURES used in the videogame. But I've been excluded from the CREDIT LIST of this videogame like a "punishment" from the managers of Rebel Act Studios, because I stopped my colaboration with this Company and because I am out of keeping with the "methods" of work of this managers
More information on what took place is avaliable on the site. Anyway, on to the textures. Click here to go on to the site. From what I can see, there are hundreds of textures there, all hand painted, of various levels of quality. I see many textures there which would lend themselves well to a few Lost City based FMs. Go for it!

I'm going to contact David Gurrea about getting these textures mirrored, so people can download them as zip files once again.

Thanks goes to Spitter & Mokkis for getting this info to me. In fact, Spitter already put together some scenes using these textures, and posted two screenshots:

Shot 1
Shot 2

I hope he doesn't mind me posting these here. :)

Alliance Review
- 6:28:57 PM - Elenkis
This time Eric D'Avignon has reviewed Jeremy Catlin's Alliance and awarded the mission with 6 hammers.

Hammer Score: 6.0 of 10
Comments by Reviewer:
  • Pros: Good gameplay and architecture (in every place but the start).
  • Cons: Very poor city area at the start of the mission, no map, weak story.
  • Bottom Line: I bet many people have stopped playing this mission soon after starting, because of bad first impressions... but it really is worth a deeper look.

  • Thanks again Eric!

    Waterlogged Review
    - 5:51:08 PM - Elenkis
Eric D'Avignon (Anarchic Fox) has reviewed Waterlogged, Belboz's Thief 2 fan mission that was runner up in the FM Trial Contest held some time ago. He gave the mission a 6 hammer score.

    Hammer Score: 6.0 of 10
    Comments by Reviewer:
Lower Range: 4 -- There's nothing actually wrong this mission, but it does require a fair bit of sludging through sewers and other wet areas... which might not be to your taste.

Upper Range: 6.5 -- A good mission if you like conventional, unconfusing Thief gameplay.

    Fanfic: A Noble Thief
    - 3:37:31 PM - Elenkis
Lady Xila has completed the third chapter of A Noble Thief, her novel in development. Here's a peek at her latest chapter:
The voices cut off as a door across the room closed Xila stood shock still. Beaten to the punch again! Xila was about to go after them when the door across the room opened again and a guard walked in.
First, he saw the empty display cases. Then he saw Xila.

    “Thief!”

Xila spun around and ran through the door. The two guards outside were too surprised to take a swing at her as she ran by, for which she was very glad. She sped though the house and hoped desperately that her luck would hold out.

Xila’s greatest quality was never being lucky.

    Thanks Xila!

    Looking Glass Studios... The Book?
    - 1:20:00 PM - Dan
I have a message to relay to you all:
To all Looking Glass fans everywhere:

Hi folks. I'm a gaming journalist who's written several articles about Looking Glass Studios, Thief, and related subjects in recent years, for both gamer and mainstream publications. I'm now working on an opportunity that should be of great interest to a lot of you, and my friends at TTLG have generously agreed to help out with that:

I am talking with a major tech publisher about writing a book on the history of Looking Glass Studios: its rise, its fall, and the developers who now carry on in the Looking Glass spirit. It'll be in-depth and personality-intensive, but also include a lot of technical and creative nitty gritty for industry members and gamers, especially regarding LGS's major games like Thief, System Shock, and Ultima Underworld. Because Looking Glass' fans are such an integral part of their success-- and because the Fan Mission developers are doing such amazing things-- I also plan to devote a chapter to TTLG, its spinoffs, and the FM community.

The trouble is, while the publisher really likes the book proposal, they're not sure there's a large enough audience to justify an entire book devoted to Looking Glass Studios. (The book would be for an imprint primarily catering to the game industry, which somewhat narrows its potential audience.)

That's where you come in: I'm convinced that there must be thousands of hardcore LGS fans who aren't necessarily in the game industry, but would love to buy and read such a book. And I would love your help, to prove that to the publisher. If we can, it'll boost our chances of committing the Looking Glass story to posterity-- a rare thing, in the notoriously short-attention span of the gaming medium. But if computer games ever stand a chance of truly becoming the new medium of the 21st century, the story of Looking Glass is something that needs to be told.

So check out the poll to the right, register your vote, and make yourself heard! (And send your fellow gamer friends this way, too.)

    Many thanks,

Anonymous Journalist and Dedicated Thief Lover

There you have it. We need over a thousand votes. If you are registered in the forum, Go here and vote, rather than using the website poll. If you are not registered on the forums, and don't want to be, then please use the poll on the site.

Please do not vote more than once, either by using multiple forum identities, voting on the site and the forum, voting on multiple sites (i.e. TTLG & The Circle) or other various and easy-to-do ways of voting more than once. We need a thousand real votes... not a bunch of fake votes.

Please do tell all your friends, and as many other gaming sites as you can. Spread the word out. Let people know we need votes.

    Thank you.

    Thief 3 on PS2
    - 9:20:26 AM - Dan
I just read a post on PS2.IGN.COM (thanks for the tip, Unstoppable) which told that Thief 3 is coming on PS2 as well. This isn't a huge surprise, considering that Deus Ex is already a PS2 title, and DX2 is going to be as well.

So there you have it. Both games will be played on three platforms - PC, XBox, and PS2. This means more prosperity for ION Storm and Eidos, which will hopefully ensure both group's longevity. :)

    -Edit-

Uhm... actually this is really old news. Whoops! In fact, Elenkis says that IGN got the news... FROM US. Heh. :) Welp, there goes my memory.

    Fanfic: Separation
    - 10:59:15 AM - Elenkis
Separation is a great new story from Vadim Kokielov (better known to the community as GayleSaver). This is still a first draft of the story and he would appreciate feedback and comments on the work. Here's a peek:
The separatists, also known as Mechanists, were, in the long run, not better than the Hammers. Although they gained momentum within the Order with amazing speed, attracting almost every youth, their idiocy was revealed quickly after their emergence as a new Order. The Mechanist leader, Karras, would make mistakes. He was my associate at the time of my tale, and a mark of a somber history of an ill friendship. Although Karras's respect for me was immense, partly for my intelligence, his views were unlike mine. My knowledge of his inner mind was limited, and while on the surface he appeared ready to lead this movement to light, his true intentions were hidden behind his eyes. When he spoke to me, I sensed a darkness in his expression. This darkness was not in any tangible part of his image. It was an element of his speech; his voice mocked me and any who spoke to him.
    Thanks Vadim!

    Which Thief Character Are You?
    - 12:29:03 AM - Elenkis
Just spotted this thread in the forums and thought it was pretty cool :)

Long time lurker Ignatius has set up a fun little Thief themed personallity quiz to reveal which character you really are! According to the 100% accurate results I myself am a Keeper, which I can certainly live with (a suitable cover for my other line of work in the "borrowing" business) ;)

Which Thief character are you? Be brave and take the test:

Fanfic: A Thief in the 30's
    - 4:53:38 AM - Elenkis
Many congratulations go to Antonio Salazar who has now finished his fanfic novel, A Thief in the 30's! The novel tells the story of thieves Garrett and Mercury, who get caught up in an adventure they never bargained for. The final three chapters bring the total up to Twenty; that's 39674 words, and 71 Word Pages according to Antonio's author note :)
Here's a peek at the action:
“Attaaaaaack!!!!!” Mercury screamed. And the thieves did. Garrett, looking around him in panic, disappeared into the shadows and left the makeshift enclosure made by the apemen. Two minutes later, however, he turned around. As he arrived at the buildings where the thieves were trapped, he saw pandemonium. Mercury’s call had mobilized all the thieves. The apes, who had been informed by Garrett that they would vastly outnumber the thieves, found that both sides had equal numbers after but a few minutes of fighting.

Garrett leaped into the fight. Left and right, he slashed the apes and felt his blade sink into ape flesh with a great sense of satisfaction. But all of a sudden, after he had saved a fellow thief from certain slaughter by driving his blade into an apeman’s back, he felt a blade pressed to his own throat. Looking down expectantly, he confirmed his fears: The blade was black, with Keeper carvings on it.

Thanks Antonio, and good luck with the upcoming fan mission you can now attend to!

Working here on the Circle it never ceases to amaze me how dedicated us taffers are to our favourite game series. Drunk_Zombie from Russia is certainly no exception; the artwork he has sent in happens to be a picture of a room they are decorating with Thief wall paintings. He says that it's not yet finished and will continue to send new pictures, very cool. Nice work Zombie!
