2007 FM Year in Review
- 12:23:57 PM - Dan
Pavlovscat plays every single FM released. When it comes to what's what in the FM scene, she knows the answer. So, I am very pleased to present our 2007 FM Year in Review, by Pavlovscat.
Last year was a good one for taffers. The break down of releases is as follows: 4 for TG, 66 for T2 (3 GER, 1 POL), 4 for T3 and 4 demos. That makes a grand total of 78 missions & demos released in 2007! This is a refresher of all these releases with the demos listed first in order of release dates followed by the missions, also in date order.
A brief summary is given of each mission, as well as insightfull comments to inform those of only slim precious time where they has best place their taffing attention. So many missions came out this year that it would have been easy to miss one in the shuffle. So check out the list, and maybe you'll spot a hidden gem that you missed.

The Dark Mod: Alpha Tech Demo
- 11:26:14 AM - Biohazard
New Horizon has recently posted the release of The Dark Mod's Alpha Tech Demo, showcasing a small level from their Doom 3 mod based on the Thief series.

Broken Glass Studios is proud to present Thief's Den, a short alpha demo of The Dark Mod. Thief's Den is just a few rooms but it is a complete, fully playable mission, and includes a good selection of the main Dark Mod features. Keep in mind that The Dark Mod is still a work in progress and this is reflected in the demo. Voices are temporary placeholders, for example, and AI behavior is not yet fully developed. You will certainly find bugs and glitches but we hope that doesn't spoil your enjoyment too much.

Any flaws or failings in this demo do not necessarily indicate limitations in The Dark Mod's potential but just this particular demo — which was originally begun as a very rough accompaniment to a mission development tutorial. It was never intended for release as a playable mission but was modified into a workable game so everyone could see the current state of progress and have some fun.

Instructions for installing the alpha can be found here.

Bestest FM 4 by Sluggs Released
- 10:52:10 PM - pavlovscat
New Mission
Released January 16, 2008 - Bestest FM 4: Wishy Washy for T2 by Sluggs - who else?

The Mission:
You've broken into a beautiful, but smelly, mansion. You explore and discover that there are no bathrooms, so what stinks? The people! YUCK!! So give them all a bath before you steal them blind.

Impressions:
Well, if you've played the earlier Bestest FM missions, you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect - total lunacy! Number four in the series doesn't disappoint. Sluggs' creative mind has produced another hilarous farce of a mission. Don't miss it.

Screenshots:

If you haven't seen them yet, play the whole series: The original Bestest FM, Bestest FM 2: Fairground Attraction, and Bestest FM 3: In the Link of an Eye. Check the Forum Discussion Thread to see what other taffers think.

Time for Culture by cardia1 Released
- 1:56:41 AM - pavlovscat
New Mission
January 07, 2008 - Time for Culture a mission for T2 by cardia1

The Mission:
Miss Broken Arts has asked for your assistance. Her job at the museum is being threatened. You are heading to the museum to find out who is threatening Miss Broken Arts' job, her good name & her earwax sculptures. Of course, you will make the trip worth your time by lining your pockets.

Impressions:
This mission is a keyhunt. You have no weapons because you won't need them. The keys are hidden but not impossibly. You begin in the Museum Director's house where you find a series of keys that will lead you to the museum. There are more keys to be found in the museum.
Sometimes keyhunts can grow tedious, but I don't think you will be bored by cardia1's latest. He has created a beautiful, modern museum with more artwork in one place than I have seen outside of a real life museum or a book. There are also a few surprises to add more interest, like the teleport doors. The architecture of the museum is very well done, and I thouroughly enjoyed finding my way through it. The music was chosen perfectly. It is not overwhelming, but it adds to the atmosphere.

Stats:
Playing on normal, I finished in 45 minutes. I did beta test this one, so I knew the best ways to go. I ended with 6097/7737 loot.

New Texture Enhancement Patch by Nameless Voice
- 4:10:19 AM - pavlovscat
New Patch
Released January, 01 2008 - Thief Enhancement Pack 1 an object enhancement patch for T1-TG-T2 by Nameless Voice

Purpose:
How about a new look for Thief for the new year? This patch is a simple install that improves the look of every day Thief objects such as doors, boxes, barrels, food, plates, goblets, weapons and many other items.

Installation:
The patch has an auto-install file or can be installed manually. If you install it in Thief 1/Gold and notice white, textureless objects, as pictured below, or experience other problems, then you have an older version of the patch. Please download the current version at any of the listed links.

Compatibility:
This patch will work with most FMs because it changes the stock textures. Custom textures should override the patched textures. This means that the patch does not interfere with highly customized missions. In addition to the screenshot missions, I have briefly tested the following missions and experienced no problems: The Seven Sisters, Lord Alan's Factory, Bane II: Cult of the Damned, Mystery at the St. Anne Inn, The Wedding of Lady Dark, Ultima Ratio, Night Falcon, Murder in Featherstone, Eternal Candle, and several others. I haven't encountered any problems.
