Plot Description: You've just paid handsomely for the construction of a secluded hideaway adjacent to the Great Forest. The contractor was as discrete as a lot of money and threats can cause him to be. How the contractor kept the work under wraps was his problem. If it became your problem, you would have to start eliminating the leaks, and he knows it. Apart from the contractor, pagans made up the bulk of the work force. After what you went through alongside Viktoria, you and the pagans have reason to trust each other. Time to inspect the place and relax a little. As always, you keep a keen eye out for any change of plans. Take things as they come, and always follow through with what you start ... Garrett's basic survival technique.

Additional Comments: Although some portions of this level may seem impossible, I assure you they ARE possible. A hint ... don't waste your gas arrows at the beginning.

PLEASE! TURN ON Weather and Fog! Half of this game is outdoors, in snow and fog.

Version 2 Comments by Andrew Dagilis and Alex Thomson:

  • Pros: Solid story, impressive map design, beautiful use of color, some gorgeous settings, immersive atmosphere and gameplay.
  • Cons: Dodgy light propagation; some technical slips (not all of them minor); areas of high polycounts (and thus choppy framerates on weaker machines).
  • Bottom line: Stronghold is one of the more immersive fan missions produced, its technical fumbles having little effect on its engaging gameplay.

Version 3 Comments by David Riegel:

  • Pros: A beautiful snow setting, a suspenseful atmosphere, a very unusual fortress
  • Cons: An underdeveloped story which does not sufficiently justify either your motivation for the quest nor the enemies' motivations for working together, gameplay which is far beyond the bounds of the Thief universe (no sneaking), a slow frame rate in many areas
  • Bottom Line: Stronghold remains a strong visual mission that carries the player through a variety of interesting settings, but there have been only a handful of fixes to the updated version. The mission can be extremely fun for those looking for a different type of experience with the Dark Engine, but still does not seem to meet the requirements to classify it as a 'professional' mission.

    Thief Gold Only Fan Mission
    Gerome of The Woodlands

     Filesize: 1.5 MB
     Released: 2/22/2000
     readme.txt

    By: Caleb Callaway(Despot)

Plot Description: There is a rich man that lives in the country side near the City who has earned a reputation for being hard, but honest. A classic rags-to-riches story, in fact. He has stayed clear of all political struggles and "shady" deals. He is know as Gerome of The Woodlands, after his home which he has styled "The Woodlands". No one to your knowledge has ever had anything against him. Until now. You have been contacted by a man named Sychter who said he was willing to pay well for incriminating evidence against this man. You have no idea what Sychter will achieve by this, however, he has paid you half the agreed price already, and you wouldn't want to be on his bad side. He seems to be more influential then he is saying.

Additional Comments: Note: this mission uses an object from Thief Gold, so if you own Thief-Dark Project, you need to download Datoyminaytah's TG patch.

    Comments by Geoff:

  • Pros: Well thought out design, with guard chambers and "help" chambers in separate wings. Several possible entrances. Interesting and possibly new "button" for opening a secret door.
  • Cons: Too easy. Similar guard patrols throughout castle. Requires Thief Gold or else you will have invisible fellows running about.
  • The Bottom Line: A fun little mission to do if you have a spare 20 minutes.

     Walkthrough

    By: Steven Hindley

Plot Description: Later on the same night as the setting for Garrett's Revenge earlier in the night you robbed the vault of the Hammerite bank. After which you returned to your room at the inn, you can hear the Hammerites searching for who is responsible for the robbery, it only takes one Hammer to check the registry in the local inn to see if there is anyone new in this part of town. In the bar below your room you were met by another keeper, who had some items you might find useful, for a price. You go to your room together to sort out a deal, you hear from him that the gate to the docks is open, the Hammer's opened it to escort some drunk guards somewhere. The game starts where you are dealing with the keeper. Note you start with no weapons, and no starting kit, but your lockpicks, you wore out your blackjack earlier, it fell to bits just after you got to your room at the inn, the keeper says you've got to use stealth to get through the dockyards, and so your sword would just get in the way, so he will take it and hide it in the Custom House, north of the river, for a price, which is why you don't have much cash left to buy any stuff. Also the keeper doesn't have any blackjack's left having sold one to a guard at the guard house, south of the river. Items you need to buy from shop : 2 rope arrows 2 earth arrows (moss) 1 water arrow

    Thief 2 Fan Mission
    More Time to Foil Karrass

     Filesize: 2 MB
     Released: 2/7/2000
     readme.txt

    By: Adrian May (Nirvana)

Plot Description: This is the mission after Masks. Garrett is sent out to capture a mechanist servant for Viktoria to analyse and to hopefully learn more of Karrass's plans. The mission involves a quick trip into a small mansion then onto Viktoria's Agent's house on easy, but on expert level you also have to rob an art Gallery, break into the local Armoury and a nobles mansion to find ut how his Burricks have been performing so well.

Additional Comments: This is sort of a Mission 14b. I thought the plot of Thief 2 jumped too much at the end, with Garrett being in the dark for the whole game and then suddenly knowing everything at the start of the last mission. So I'm hoping to create a steadier plot "curve".

    Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: Good sense of overall mission design; competent use of light/shadows and silent/noisy surfaces; resupply points are well located; a burrick racetrack and stable; mission can be snuck through in its entirety.
  • Cons: Programming errors, one of which can make the mission unwinnable; some areas are not properly scaled; amateur-looking shoebox exterior architecture and rudimentary sense of interior design.
  • Bottom line: Because its core gameplay components are solid, More Time to Foil Karrass (sic) easily overcomes its esthetic limitations and offers a few hours of pleasant sneaking. With a bit more practice, there's little doubt its author will produce missions with a more professional sheen.
