Thief 1 / Gold Fan Mission
Lady Whitman's Disease

 Filesize: 2.14 MB
 Released: 4/1/2000
 readme.txt

By: Robin G.

Plot Description: That man was suffering such desperation that I finally decided help him. Apparently his wife had been kidnaped by Sir Terence΄s men and now he has constrained to sell his lands by a ridiculous price. If it would not be enough, Lady Whitman, since that was the name of the lady, was afflicted by a rare disease and if she does not was taking her medication soon would die without solution.

Due to the threats, Lord Whitman had discarded from the beginning the possibility of attending the authorities, therefore distress and urgency had obligated him, according he said me, to appeal a thief like me.

Sir Terence΄s gardener, man who Lord Whitman was relying, would be the only one help I would have to break into the building. Whitman indicated me his address and gave me the key of his house where he said I would find more instructions for the quest.

Comments by Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: Good layout once you're inside the main house. Nice (though abrupt) twist ending.
  • Cons: Some of the town's architecture, like the strewing of your equipment all over the map, is too contrived to be believable. Difficult to get back out of the house once you drop in, unless you find the secret passage.
  • Bottom line: A nice way to while away an hour if you're not a stickler for architectural believability, especially once you finally get all your stuff back and tackle the house. Mr Garcia still has things to learn about mapmaking but already has a number of good things to offer -- how about another one?

    By: Alex Thomson (Dashjianta)

Plot Description: The village of Ranjeya lies at the foot of Ranstall Keep which sits atop the Alskarl hill, overlooking The City. Both village and Keep have stood for centuries, with the residents of each existing in harmony with the other. A little over a year ago the Keep came under the rulership of one Lord Dalkstan, a foreigner and a recluse. Within a week of his arrival the Keep was shut off from the village. Doors that had stood open were locked and put under heavy guard, heavy patrols walked the once peaceful streets. Underlying it all was something far more sinister...

Comments by Marecki: • Pros: Great atmosphere enhanced by the lack of colour, great-looking AI skins. • Cons: Plain architecture, small bug in AI programming, high poly count at times. • Bottom Line: A great piece of horror story which almost feels like old movies of this kind. Of course it's not as good as RTC, but pretty damn close.

Comments by Andrew Dagilis: • Pros: Good plot and story development; new enemies; original approach to developing a climate of dread; most of the level is in black-and-white. • Cons: The village is minuscule; some of the architecture is too absurd and sabotages its own immersiveness as a result (unlike in The Sword, where the dadaesque areas had a purpose, since that entire mission was a test devised by the Trickster. The keep is no test). . • Bottom Line: Ranstall Keep is genuinely horrible -- and I mean that in a good way.

    Gerome of The Woodlands

     Filesize: 1.5 MB
     Released: 2/22/2000
     readme.txt

    By: Caleb Callaway(Despot)

Plot Description: There is a rich man that lives in the country side near the City who has earned a reputation for being hard, but honest. A classic rags-to-riches story, in fact. He has stayed clear of all political struggles and "shady" deals. He is know as Gerome of The Woodlands, after his home which he has styled "The Woodlands". No one to your knowledge has ever had anything against him. Until now. You have been contacted by a man named Sychter who said he was willing to pay well for incriminating evidence against this man. You have no idea what Sychter will achieve by this, however, he has paid you half the agreed price already, and you wouldn't want to be on his bad side. He seems to be more influential then he is saying.

Additional Comments: Note: this mission uses an object from Thief Gold, so if you own Thief-Dark Project, you need to download Datoyminaytah's TG patch.

  • Pros: Well thought out design, with guard chambers and "help" chambers in separate wings. Several possible entrances. Interesting and possibly new "button" for opening a secret door.
  • Cons: Too easy. Similar guard patrols throughout castle. Requires Thief Gold or else you will have invisible fellows running about.
  • The Bottom Line: A fun little mission to do if you have a spare 20 minutes.

     readme.txt

    By: Kozmala

    Plot Description: Dear Garret,

We have been keeping an eye on the Hammers these last few months. Keeper Lukas infiltrated their order and has been passing information to us regarding their activities. It seems during extending their underground tombs they discovered an ancient temple. The markings of this temple are familiar to us. Their people stole a Talisman from us a long time ago. We thought it lost until now.

Keeper Lukas tried to retrieve it along with a thief named Felix. It should have been a simple job but for the greediness of Felix. The Hammers caught him as he tried to raid a tomb. Keeper Lukas managed to escape but we have not heard from Felix, nor do we want to...(more)

    Andrew Dagilis:

  • Pros: The mission is well thought out, paced smoothly and gradually increases in difficulty. The Hammerites have been individualized.
  • Cons: The architecture, both interior and exterior, is simplistic and very boxy. The pedestal buttons at the end are a bit unwieldy. The 5000 loot requirement in Expert is a mite high. Too thinly populated inside.
  • Bottom line: This level offers about two hours of good sneaking and skulking (on Expert mode), with several moments of tension. The plot is a fairly standard THIEF heist, and architecture isn't the author's forte, but the mission's layout -- your progression through it -- is woven together fairly nicely.

Plot Description: Later on the same night as the setting for Garrett's Revenge earlier in the night you robbed the vault of the Hammerite bank. After which you returned to your room at the inn, you can hear the Hammerites searching for who is responsible for the robbery, it only takes one Hammer to check the registry in the local inn to see if there is anyone new in this part of town. In the bar below your room you were met by another keeper, who had some items you might find useful, for a price. You go to your room together to sort out a deal, you hear from him that the gate to the docks is open, the Hammer's opened it to escort some drunk guards somewhere. The game starts where you are dealing with the keeper. Note you start with no weapons, and no starting kit, but your lockpicks, you wore out your blackjack earlier, it fell to bits just after you got to your room at the inn, the keeper says you've got to use stealth to get through the dockyards, and so your sword would just get in the way, so he will take it and hide it in the Custom House, north of the river, for a price, which is why you don't have much cash left to buy any stuff. Also the keeper doesn't have any blackjack's left having sold one to a guard at the guard house, south of the river. Items you need to buy from shop : 2 rope arrows 2 earth arrows (moss) 1 water arrow

Andrew Dagilis: Pros: The map has a lot of places to visit (though few of them look good). No lack of guards to blackjack, once you get one. Cons: The architecture, the textures, the ornamentation, some object location -- the map is almost entirely lacking in esthetics. Some must-find objects can be quite frustrating to locate. The "New Objectives" chimes are heard too often and unnecessarily. Bottom line: This level has a good, though standard, basic premise, but it's not handled or developed with any originality. The decor is almost uniformly hard on the eyes, which makes it even more unfortunate that you'll spend so much time in it hunting for particular objects.

Sadly, his architectural achievement is undermined by slipshod plotting and merely average scripting. Such a well designed setting deserves plot underpinnings of equal quality; unfortunately, the plotting feels a bit hodgepodgey, as if it's being made up as you go along.

Plot Description: Times are hard. The incident in Peteroski did not help. I should have known better than to trust Iron, but he paid for it. The unfortunate side effect is that I am here, in this village of Winterhelm, the laughing stock of the whole county and stuck here with not an iota of help, and out of cash.

I need my reputation to be spotless, and lucklily, someone is available to provide for it. Apparently there is a local noble by the name of Theron who is the devil on everyone's lips, he is not well liked.

Rumour has it the he is a drug baron of sorts, the caves under the village are stocked with the mushroom nocturnis, which makes an extremely strong liquor once distilled which is also narcotic. He owns the constabulary and is apparently making a very tidy profit, enough to buy a few sacred treasures. After, well, let us say persuading a former servant who was ejected I have a rough idea of the layout of the manor, and the goods that are contained within. The most exceptional of this is the Orb, an item rumoured to be that of magic, but we all know about those sort of things don't we? There's also the Ankh of Mishra, a religous plaything, and perhaps more tangible there is the Golden egg of Tut. They should all fetch some revenue....(more)

That horn must be more than a mere trinket to them and it will be impossible to fence it off now in the City. Time to leave. I've got a trustworthy Southdock contact, Fleur, who can arrange passage for me to a place called Willow Island - home to some wealthy -and discreet- art collectors. I'm leaving tonight... I can't stay any longer as the Hammers are breaking down the door of anyone they suspect of this crime - and heads are rolling.
