The Order of the Hammer
The Hammerite Order is a group of craftsmen who worship the Builder, one of the lesser gods of ancient lore. The Order was founded several hundred years ago by a prophet who called himself "The Builder's Apprentice". Hammerite theology has since elevated both, using the terms "Master Builder" and "First Apprentice". The Order is, at its roots, a religious order, the art of craftsmanship being their method of worship. The Order's doctrine teaches of the superiority of technology and human achievement over and above the aspects of nature. As discussed later, this often puts them at odds with the Order of the Vine.
Although renowned throughout the land for their crafts and structures, the Hammerites are often feared because of their strict philophosies regarding law and order, as well as crime and punishment. In fact, the Order has their own prison which they maintain and warden. Called CragsCleft, it is seated in the old CragsCleft Mining Quarry just outside of the City. This facility doubles as their primary Foundry. Much to the chagrin of the Baron, the Hammerites often incarcerate citizens there whom they deem "undesirable". However, the Hammerites seem to intimidate the City Administration enough so that they are left to their own devices.
The Hammerites have a heirarchal command structure, consisting of "castes", or levels, of rank. The highest rank of the Order is that of the Priesthood, the religious leaders who are at the heart of the Hammerite doctrine. The High Priest himself is the single most important influence in the Order's movements. Under the Priesthood is the Warrior caste, craftsmen who double as warriors, guards, and policemen. These men are well-trained fighters, and often have experience of war under the Order's various "campaigns" against other cities. Slightly below the Warriors are the Workers, Hammerites whose sole purpose in life is to serve the Builder and practice his craft. The average Hammerite worker is given basic combat training, and can fight if necessary. Lastly, there is the Acolyte caste, the Novices and Apprentices. These young men are training to earn a higher status within the Order, and must undergo several years of grueling study and work.
Even though the Hammerite Order is now considered a "cult of fanatics" by most, the Order was at one time the mainstream religion of the City. For over a century, the Hammerite Cathedral was full to overflowing every worship day. About fifty years ago, the Cathedral was sealed up along with that entire section of the City, now referred to as the "Old Quarter." Many rumors abound regarding the reasons for this. The Hammerites seem to believe the catastrophe was caused by supernatural forces, although they've never revealed more than that. It should be noted, however, that looters fortunate enough to return from the Old Quarter have reported seeing "Hammerite ghosts" beyond the Barricade, reports which are often silenced by Hammerite incarceration.
The Hammerite Order has often been at odds with a lesser-known religious sect called the Order of the Vine. The Vine Order maintains a doctrine which is almost the exact opposite of the Hammerites, exalting Nature above mankind. The Vines have been known to dabble in natural magic, a practice the Hammerites seem to find quite distasteful. Although little is openly known about the Vine Order, it is known by us that they and the Hammerites have had altercations in the past. It is perhaps for this reason that the Vines are so secretive. The Hammerites have often reputed even the existence of an Order of the Vine, and the Vines seem content with the illusion. Perhaps more of this relationship will be revealed later.
